What's Happening on Oahu in December?

Since winter break is approaching, make an easy and healthy holiday snack for your kids to munch on while you're out shopping or hanging out at home!

Holiday Dried Fruit & Almond Clusters

  • 2 cups sliced almonds, lightly toasted
  • 8 oz dried fruit mix (cranberries, blueberries raisins & cherries
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  1. Preheat oven to 300°F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, mix almonds with dried fruits.
  3. Whisk egg whites in a small bowl until frothy. Add sugar and continue whisking until combined (should look like a loose paste).
  4. Pour egg mixture over nut/fruit mixture and stir. Spoon tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheet. The ingredients will not stick well, so push them together with spoon.
  5. Place baking sheets in oven for 20-25 minutes. Let cool.

**Makes 20 clusters (2 clusters = 1 serving size). Meets USDA Food Program requirement for protein/meat alternate at snack time.

OR you plan a fun science-themed holiday activity with your little ones and make a Christmas Tree Observatory? All you need is a water bottle, snip some branches from your Christmas tree, some optional pine cones and cool science props (such as a magnifying glass, tweezers, safety glasses etc.).

  1. Snip some Christmas tree branches and pine cones and place in separate water bottles.
  2. Add water for a different effect (optional).
  3. Observe!

Here are a few things you can discuss with your kiddos while doing this activity:

  • How plants change and what that means
  • What plants need in order to survive
  • Explore different textures, colors, and smells
  • Practice gross and fine motor skills with cutting, measuring, and moving objects around to observe!

After your activity, visit the downtown area to celebrate the colorful cheer of the holiday season at the Honolulu City Lights!
