Choosing Quality Care

Choosing child care is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. To help you select quality child care for your infant, toddler, or preschooler, this booklet provides information on the different types of childcare, how to make your selection, preparing your child, and working with your child’s care provider.

Executive Office of Early Learning

The EOEL Public Prekindergarten Program is provided in collaboration with the Hawai’i Department of Education (HIDOE). The program provides high-quality learning experiences that address children’s physical development and health, social and emotional development, cognition, language and literacy, and approaches to learning. EOEL currently operates classrooms on all islands and offers programs in Hawaiian language immersion. Classroom locations are on select HIDOE campuses and are free to eligible children. All teachers are highly qualified, and class size is limited to 20 children with 2 teachers per classroom.

DOE Child Find

Child Find is a statewide effort to identify, locate and evaluate children and youth who may have a disability and need special education and related services. This process ensures that every child who needs support receives assistance to succeed.

Before and After School Program

Out-of-school time (OST) programs, funded by state and federal resources, are designed to provide high-quality learning experiences that extend beyond the regular school day and exposes students to experiences and opportunities not found during the regular school day. These programs are essential in enhancing student outcomes by linking academic learning with OST activities, positively impacting behavior, attendance, and academic performance.

Choosing Quality Child Care for Children with Disabilities and High Support Needs

Are you looking for child care for a child with a disability or who needs a high level of support? Interviewing potential child care educators can help you learn whether they may be able to meet your child’s unique needs. This checklist can guide you in using what you know about your child to think through what safe and quality child care looks like for them.
